| What goes around comes around; life experiences prove karma is true Tim Mulcrone In Buddhist teaching‚ the law of karma says this: "For every event that occurs‚ there will follow another event whose existence was caused by the first‚ and this second event will be pleasant or unpleasant according as its cause was skillful or unskillful." It is not unlike the same logic to which the science of physics adheres: For every action‚ there is an equal and opposite reaction. I don't know that I buy into the whole concept of fate‚ and I think karma might be too far out for me to believe. But I do know that it recently seems like someone has been keeping tabs on people and making sure to level the playing field. I'm happy to share some examples. I was home a couple of weekends ago‚ and my mom wasted no time in sending me out to rake leaves. I was out raking leaves, and I had a huge pile on the sidewalk to put in the street. Some kids started motoring through the piles‚ making the leaves go everywhere. Sure enough‚ on the freckled‚ obnoxious kid's third trip through the leaves‚ karma delivered a judo kick to his nuts. The kid ate it face-first into the sidewalk. It was easily one of the top-three wipeouts of all time. About two weeks ago I headed home from one of the bars‚ chowing down on an undercooked $5 pizza. For no reason at all I spiked it‚ and it landed on a girl's foot as she passed by. Now my first instinct to laugh took over‚ and I don't believe I was ever able to choke out an apology (sorry‚ Ms. Pizza Foot). Not more than three days later‚ I arrived home from a long day of school and work. I was so hungry, I swear my stomach had started to eat itself. I got the oven heated‚ pizza cooked and as I went to make the transition from oven to counter‚ my left wrist instantly fell asleep. My dinner slid right onto my kitchen floor‚ cheese-side down. Now‚ there are some good examples of things evening out by something good happening. The first one that comes to mind is from earlier this semester. I was down to scraping the last of my cash flow. Then I had a perfect job land right in my lap after two weeks of calling around and finding nothing. Whether it's actually karma or not‚ I couldn't care less. I need to find a way to beat the system. Spiking pizza on people's feet is just too hilarious not to do again. |
